Shoreline changes from 1942-2015 record natural processes and manmade interference. Natural erosion removed up to 900 ft of beach on NE Follets Island. Surfside was eroded up to 700 ft due to manmade diversion of the lower Brazos (CLICK HERE)
More than 800 ft was eroded from West Galveston Bay, up to 400 ft was eroded from Christmas Point. Intracoastal Waterway dredging and boat wake caused widening of the waterway from the original 180 ft to 500 - 800 ft. Local accretion occurred where old storm washovers were silted in and where land was infilled for development.
A net total of 3.6 sq. mi. of land was lost from 1942-2015, representing 10% of the land area.
